Academia breaks people.
It’s sad, and it shouldn’t happen, but it’s true and it does.
It has a way of chewing up passionate, smart people and pushing them to their limits.
The PhD is where is begins.
Plagued by uncertainty, doubt, competitiveness and perfectionism, a PhD is an incubator of insecurity and mental ill-health.
So next time you find yourself struggling remember that it isn’t necessarily because of anything you have or haven’t done – the institution plays a big role too.
And remember that many of those around you may also be struggling. Not all of those struggles are visible, and they aren’t all big. But however visible or significant, each is worthy of attention and support.
So as you move along your phD journey look out for your own wellbeing while looking out for that of those around you. And above all, be kind to yourself.
